Pakistan to host first major cricket event since 2009 as Champions Trophy 2025 returns

Pakistan prepares to welcome cricket's elite after 16-year wait

For the first time since 2009, Pakistan is preparing to stage a major international cricket tournament, with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 set to bring the world's leading one-day sides back to its stadiums.

The prestigious event, which revives one of cricket's most iconic white-ball competitions, positions Pakistan as a significant host on the global stage. The return of global cricketing giants is being framed not merely as a sporting occasion but as a symbol of resilience and a milestone in the country's cricketing history.

Fans are brimming with excitement, although the event does present some logistical challenges, particularly with discussions around venue security and participation dynamics.

Eight teams, two groups, one trophy

The tournament will feature eight elite teams — India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan — split into two highly competitive groups. With a round-robin group stage, every match carries weight as sides chase the top spots that lead into the semi-finals.

"Each match will be crucial as teams aim to secure their places in the knockout stages, ensuring edge-of-the-seat excitement throughout the group phase," the build-up notes.

Venues and opening fixture

Matches will be played across Pakistan's iconic stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. The event kicks off with a blockbuster clash between the host nation and New Zealand, setting the stage for an electrifying tournament.

Each venue is expected to deliver a unique cricketing atmosphere, with fans eagerly awaiting the action-packed fixtures.
