Abishek Porel denied bail and sent to 14-day judicial custody in alleged rape case

Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been denied bail by a Chinsurah court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with an alleged rape and blackmail case filed by a medical student.

Abishek Porel remanded to judicial custody

Porel was taken into custody on August 11 in Hooghly following questioning over a formal complaint lodged by the young woman. He underwent a mandatory medical examination before being produced before the magistrate on Friday.

Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh confirmed the development, stating: “There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today.”

Allegations Against Porel

According to the police complaint, the woman alleged that Porel initiated a relationship with her under the false promise of marriage. She claimed that following the breakdown of their relationship, Porel threatened to leak private photographs of her online.

Police have registered a case invoking 19 sections of the law, with the majority carrying non-bailable charges. The complaint also outlines an alleged incident in Delhi, where the complainant stated she was wrongfully confined, denied food, and isolated, leaving her physically weak.

The complainant further stated that while both families had previously engaged in discussions regarding marriage, the relationship collapsed after she reportedly discovered Porel's involvement with other women.

High Court Intervention and Custody

The matter had earlier reached the Calcutta High Court, where Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya ordered the Magra Police Station to seize electronic devices—including the cricketer's mobile phone—and submit a detailed investigation report.

Following his arrest and Friday's court appearance, the magistrate rejected his bail plea, remanding Porel to judicial custody for 14 days as investigators continue their probe.
