Mumbai Social Worker Attacked With Sickles Outside Malwani Office; One Held as Police Hunt Three More

Brutal Attack in Gate No. 8 Area of Malwani

A social worker from Malwani was brutally attacked with sickles by a gang of men outside his office early on Monday, police said. The victim, identified as Nadeem Shaikh, was targeted after he raised his voice against a local history-sheeter named Sajid, according to officers investigating the case.

The attack occurred around 2.30 am on Monday in the Gate No. 8 area of Malwani, where Shaikh resides. Malwani Police have registered a case of attempted murder against four people, and so far one person has been arrested.

Victim Identified Attackers in Viral Video

In a video clip that has gone viral, Shaikh could be seen bleeding profusely, with deep cuts on his arms, chin and neck. He was also stabbed in the chest. In the video, he identified two of the four attackers as Shoeb and Mehtaab. He also said he could identify the attackers if they were produced before him.

According to an acquaintance of the victim, the gang had been lying in wait for Shaikh to return home. "He met me at my office and we were together till early on Monday. He then left for home. The gang was waiting for him and were hiding behind some vehicles. They slashed him badly with sickles," said Shaikh's acquaintance, Kabir.

Kabir added that Shaikh had raised his voice against Sajid's criminal activities and had posted about them, which police believe may have motivated the attack.

Victim Undergoing Treatment at Hospital

Shaikh was rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in an autorickshaw following the assault. He is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police said the victim had previously been threatened by the gang for speaking out against the history-sheeter, and that efforts are on to trace the three remaining suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
