Australia Drop Nic Maddinson From Squad as Steve Smith's Neck Injury Clouds Cape Town Decider

Selection Shake-Up Before Series Decider

Australia have released opener Nic Maddinson from their Test squad on the eve of the third and deciding Test against South Africa in Cape Town, while captain-in-waiting injury concern Steve Smith remains in doubt as he manages a neck issue. The three-match series is locked at 1-1.

Maddinson and back-up wicketkeeper Sam Harper have both been allowed to return home to play Sheffield Shield cricket, a move that clears the way for Matt Renshaw to reclaim his place at the top of the order. Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, meanwhile, are fit again and available for selection.

Maddinson's Surprise Cameo Ends

Maddinson's departure follows a difficult four-innings return to the Test side after almost a decade away, in which he made scores of 0, 48, 0 and 8. His presence in the XI, however, had a tactical knock-on effect: it allowed Renshaw to slide into the middle order, where he responded with 190 and 81 in Durban to help Australia win the match while Green was unavailable.

Chief selector George Bailey was candid about the numbers but insisted the selection had served a purpose.

"Performance wise, would you like more runs? Yes, so that's OK," Bailey said. "Did it allow us to set the rest of the team up the way we wanted to, whilst we were working with the group we had? Yes.

"We always talk about what do we see when we see players at our best. I think we saw a glimpse of that in the second innings in Durban.

"With him going home, we wanted to be clear to him he wasn't a stop-gap. The same reasons and process we worked through to get him here will be the same questions we ask across the whole summer."

Labuschagne Under the Microscope

Australia must also decide whether to retain Marnus Labuschagne, who has not scored a century since the 2023 Ashes. The No. 3 has made 37, 37, 14 and 39 in the ongoing series, repeatedly passing 30 without going on.

Bailey acknowledged the pattern without closing the door on the Queenslander. "We're seeing some good things, yes. Is there a block at the moment around 30s? Yes," he said. "Still contributing with his ability to get through a number of balls. So it's a decision around what does it look like he gets through there? And is it helping others around him and helping the team get a result we ultimately want?"

Inglis, who has recovered from a finger injury, is one option Australia could consider in Labuschagne's place. Labuschagne's fate may also hinge on Smith's fitness, with the two selection calls interlinked as Australia weigh up their best combination for the series decider.

Smith's Race Against Time

Smith, the experienced No. 4, spent only 20 minutes facing throwdowns in the nets on Sunday as he continued his recovery from the neck problem. He was expected to face faster bowling during Monday's training session, with Australia confident he would be ready to play when the side returns to Newlands for the series decider.

The team is not expected to be announced until the toss on Tuesday, leaving Australia's line-up unresolved until the final moment.

Background

Australia's batting frailties were laid bare in the second Test at St George's Park, where they were bowled out for 99 in the first innings, as reported on 23 October 2026. On that occasion Smith holed out to Kagiso Rabada with the second new ball in the third over, a dismissal that helped trigger the collapse.
