Former India U-19 Star and LPL Co-Owner Manjot Kalra Arrested Over Alleged Bribery
Shock Arrest on Tournament Opening Day
In a stunning development just hours before the commencement of the 2026 Lanka Premier League (LPL), Manjot Kalra, a co-owner of the Jaffna Kings franchise, was arrested by Sri Lankan authorities on Friday, July 17. The arrest was carried out by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports following allegations that Kalra attempted to bribe a player in connection with the tournament.
Kalra, 27, is well-remembered in Indian cricket for his match-winning unbeaten century in the final of the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup, where he helped India secure the trophy against Australia. After transitioning into sports entrepreneurship, he and businessman Mayank Goel joined the Jaffna Kings ownership group earlier this year.
Details of the Alleged Bribery
According to investigators, the arrest was the culmination of a probe triggered approximately 10 days ago when players reported an illicit approach. Police reports indicate that the complaints were filed by Sri Lankan cricketers Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, and Dunith Wellalage, all of whom represent the Jaffna Kings.
Following his arrest, Kalra was produced before a magistrate. The timing of the incident was particularly critical, as the Jaffna Kings were scheduled to face the Galle Gallants in the season opener at the SSC in Colombo on the same day.
Sri Lanka Cricket's Response
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) issued a formal statement confirming their awareness of the situation and their commitment to transparency. The board stated:
"Sri Lanka Cricket, together with the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026, will extend its fullest cooperation to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports should any assistance be sought in connection with any inquiry arising from the matter."
SLC emphasized a "zero-tolerance approach" to corruption and unethical practices. To safeguard the integrity of the 2026 edition, the board has engaged Integrity Mentors, an independent anti-corruption and sports integrity organization, to provide specialist support and education throughout the event.
Despite the legal turmoil surrounding the franchise owner, SLC confirmed that the tournament, which consists of 24 matches and concludes on August 8, will "proceed as planned without any interruption."

Manjot Kalra's rise to prominence came during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, playing in a star-studded squad led by Prithvi Shaw that included future international stars such as Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, and Shivam Mavi.
