Peixoto demands more home wins after Wolves let lead slip against Portsmouth

Late Devlin equaliser denies Wolves home win

Wolves were denied a third home league win of the season by Portsmouth's Terry Devlin, much to the disappointment of head coach Cesar Peixoto. His side squandered a lead to draw 1-1 with Portsmouth at Molineux on Tuesday.

In a game lacking quality in the final third, half-time substitute Jordan James put Wolves ahead in the 62nd minute, firing his shot in at Nicolas Schmid's near post. Wolves looked set for their first home league win since September 20, but Portsmouth snatched a point four minutes from time through Devlin, who brilliantly volleyed home.

Promotion hopes hit by home form

A win would have lifted Wolves up to fifth in the Championship table and above rivals West Brom. Instead, they sit seventh, five points adrift of leaders Swansea City. Wolves have managed just two home wins from five so far in 2026-27 (D2 L1), a pattern that has persisted at Molineux since their relegation to the second tier.

One positive was that Wolves did not lose successive home league games for the first time since February 2017. However, there was little to celebrate. Wolves managed an expected goals (xG) total of 1.01 from 15 shots, with only two on target, compared with Portsmouth's 0.65 xG from eight attempts.

Peixoto: 'We need more victories at home'

"It's disappointing to get only one point. We need more victories at home," Peixoto told BBC Radio West Midlands. "In the first half we have to do much more. We didn't attack the spaces. But we made two substitutes for the second half.

"We were the better team all game, but we only scored one goal, we did not get a second goal, and then we defended too deep in the last few minutes."

Peixoto also provided an injury update, saying he hopes Adam Armstrong will be fit for Saturday. Kieran Trippier felt something in the game, and Peixoto hopes it is only a minor issue.

Portsmouth extend unbeaten run against Wolves

For Portsmouth, the point extended their unbeaten league run against Wolves to seven matches (W3 D4). Pompey have also not lost in their last three Championship outings, which included difficult fixtures against Sheffield United and Norwich City. They moved up to 15th in the standings.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho praised his players. "We've played four top sides in 10 days, and with the injuries we have, then it's a great point. 15 points from the first 11 games? I'll take that," Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent.

"If you add in the fact that we were a goal down under immense pressure, then it's a brilliant result. Wolves' goal was a kick in the teeth, but Terry Devlin has shown us time and time again over the last few years what can happen when the ball falls to him."
