Can PU performance gains offset McLaren’s downforce deficit?
McLaren's Progress with Mercedes Power Unit
F1 technical expert Mark Hughes examines how McLaren is adapting to the Mercedes power unit. Despite a double non-start in Shanghai due to unrelated electrical PU issues, the team's qualifying performance in China showed significant improvement.
In Melbourne, the leading McLaren qualified 0.862s off Mercedes pole. This deficit was halved in Shanghai to 0.486s. Team boss Andrea Stella attributed this improvement to a better understanding of the complex Mercedes PU.

"We've been able to learn a bit more about how the power unit works," Stella said. "It's very complicated, with a very complex way of working."
McLaren's progress suggests they are closing the performance gap with Mercedes, but challenges remain.
