A former member of the midfield ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona has secured a return to the club in a new-look coaching role.

Sergio Busquets, the 38-year-old ex-Spanish international, was a surprise visitor to the Ciutat Esportiva late last month and was photographed by media outlets upon his arrival at the facility. The visit was initially thought to be a social call, maintaining a close relationship with several leading figures behind the scenes at Barça.

Word soon emerged that the trip had a more specific purpose. Fresh off bringing a close to his legendary playing days, Busquets is ready to try his hand on the touchline moving forward.

On Monday Barcelona confirmed the start of his new journey back on the books of his beloved Blaugrana. The club posted across its social media platforms:

‘Sergio Busquets joins Barça Atlètic as assistant coach from this Monday. The Barça legend is joining Juliano Belletti’s team to bring his experience and football knowledge to the Barça team while he completes his coaching course.’

The appointment sees the midfield icon set to earn his coaching stripes back in Catalunya’s capital over the years ahead, working with Barça Atlètic as he begins his post-playing career.
