Varas backs San Diego to fill Dreyer void at Portland as Timbers seek first home win over rivals

San Diego travel to Providence Park searching for a way to win without their creative talisman

San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas

San Diego FC will be without the influential Anders Dreyer for their trip to the Portland Timbers, and while head coach Mikey Varas acknowledged it is a blow, he is relishing the chance to see who rises to the occasion.

Dreyer has been a key figure for the club, but he will miss the trip to Portland after being sent off in the closing stages of San Diego's 1-0 win over Los Angeles FC. The Dane converted an 89th-minute penalty to settle the contest, only to pick up two yellow cards from the 90th minute onward that ruled him out through suspension.

Varas' side are starting to find some form again after the World Cup break. Having gone without a win in three games either side of the hiatus (D1 L2), they are now unbeaten in three MLS outings (W2 D1). The weekend victory lifted them to 12th in the Western Conference, just a point behind ninth-placed Minnesota United.

"A great opportunity for someone else to step up"

Despite Dreyer's importance, Varas is confident his team can find a way to win without him and is treating the absence as a positive test.

"Yeah, we've played a couple of games without him, but he's played a majority of the minutes; he's such an influential player for us," Varas said. "We're analyzing, tactically, right now, about how to replace him, specifically against Portland.

"Ultimately, it's a great opportunity for someone else to step [up] and find out exactly who we are in a really tough match without him."

With 10 goals and seven assists this season, Dreyer will be a huge miss. Marcus Ingvartsen is expected to shoulder even greater responsibility as he looks to add to his 11 goals, though he does not offer the same creative spark — he has just two assists to Dreyer's seven.

Cifuentes' Portland still adapting

For Portland, it was not the start new head coach Marti Cifuentes hoped for, as his MLS debut ended in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire. The Timbers had been unbeaten in four prior to that run (W3 D1), climbing to 10th in the West and level on points with San Diego.

His squad is still adapting to his methods, but Cifuentes is confident improvements will come.

"The way we want to play, it's going to be a lot of situations against deeper blocks, and then the relationships must grow," he said. "And it will grow because it's about small movements, small combinations and small details that, at the end, can make a difference. There is definitely some work to be done."

Players to watch

Portland Timbers – Finn Surman: The defender scored his first MLS goal with a header on Sunday, following his headed goal for New Zealand at this year's World Cup. He joins Tim Cahill (2014) and Kendall Waston (2018) as players since 2006 to score headers at both the World Cup and in MLS in the same year.

San Diego FC – Marcus Ingvartsen: With Dreyer suspended, Ingvartsen becomes central to San Diego's attacking hopes as he chases more goals to add to his tally of 11.

Match context and prediction

The head-to-head history makes for intriguing reading. The Timbers earned their first ever win over San Diego on April 25, posting a 2-1 away victory. However, San Diego avoided defeat in all five meetings between the sides in their inaugural 2025 campaign (W3 D2), including knocking Portland out of last year's playoffs in the first round.

San Diego have won three straight matches in all competitions after winning just two of their previous 17 dating back to mid-March (D6 L9). Their 1-0 success at LAFC ended a nine-match winless run on the road (D3 L6) that stretched back to March.

But Portland have scored in 14 consecutive home matches across all competitions, with San Diego the last side to keep a clean sheet at Providence Park — doing so on Decision Day last season. Since then, the Timbers have netted 34 home goals at an average of 2.43 per match.

Opta's win probability favours the hosts: Portland Timbers 46.4%, Draw 23%, San Diego FC 30.6%.
