Sorensen demands Vancouver keep control against surging Houston
Whitecaps return to the top before crucial Dynamo test
Vancouver Whitecaps restored their place at the top of the MLS Western Conference with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders, ending a three-game league winless streak and a seven-match winless run across all competitions.

Goals from Rayan Elloumi and Thomas Muller secured the points in the Cascadia Cup clash, moving Vancouver two points clear of Houston Dynamo ahead of their meeting on Wednesday. Houston can reclaim first place with a win after putting together four consecutive victories.
Sorensen wants a better attacking balance
Jesper Sorensen was encouraged by Vancouver’s defensive response against Seattle, particularly the way the team maintained its shape while pressing high. “Defensively, we didn't give much away even though we were standing high,” he said.
The coach highlighted the work of the full-backs and the team’s ability to protect the space behind them while continuing to attack. “We were pushing forward and yet having control of the backspace,” Sorensen said.
That control will be especially important against a Houston side that generally sits deeper. Sorensen acknowledged that Vancouver must improve its offensive rhythm, adding: “We still need to better flow in our offence, but that will come. We produce enough, but balance is the key.”
Houston arrive in formidable form
Ben Olsen’s Houston team are unbeaten in their last seven matches, with five wins and two draws, and have won their last four. Their most recent result was a 1-0 victory over a 10-man LA Galaxy.
Houston have also kept clean sheets in each of those four wins, marking their first four-match regular-season winning streak since 2019 and the first four-game run of shutouts in club history. Guilherme has scored in six of his last seven regular-season appearances, including each of his last four.
Vancouver hold the statistical edge
Houston ended a three-match winless run against Vancouver with a 1-0 home victory on May 16, but the Dynamo have never beaten the Whitecaps twice in one season. Vancouver’s latest shutout at Seattle was their seventh across all competitions in 2026.
Thomas Muller, who scored against Seattle, has 14 MLS goals across the regular season and playoffs. Six have come from open play, and each of those non-penalty goals was assisted.
Despite Houston’s momentum, the pre-match model gives Vancouver a 62.4% chance of victory, compared with 20.3% for a draw and 17.3% for a Houston win.
