Aston Villa complete £47m double swoop for Zion Suzuki and Matteo Ruggeri

Aston Villa have completed a significant double transfer swoop ahead of their Premier League opener against Brighton, confirming the arrivals of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma and left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid.

Villa have committed a reported £30 million (€35m) to secure Suzuki, while Ruggeri arrives for a reported £17 million (€19.8m), taking the club's combined spending in the quickfire announcement to £47 million.

Suzuki Set to Take Over as Villa No. 1

The signing of 23-year-old Japan international Suzuki is set to accelerate the transition between the posts at Villa Park, likely marking the end of Emiliano Martinez's tenure at the club. Martinez had been expected to move to Juventus earlier in the window before talks collapsed, and manager Unai Emery has spent the past two summers laying the groundwork for a long-term succession plan.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, to a Ghanaian-American father and Japanese mother before growing up in Urawa, Suzuki previously turned down an approach from Manchester United in 2023 to secure regular first-team minutes with Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden before moving to Parma. Last season in Serie A, Suzuki registered six clean sheets across 22 appearances for Parma.

Villa moved swiftly to finalize the deal after learning that a rival bid from Paris Saint-Germain was collapsing. Suzuki travelled to Birmingham to undergo a medical and is slated to step straight in as first-choice goalkeeper, with Marco Bizot serving as experienced cover.

Zion Suzuki in action

"I decided on this transfer to steadily take the next step in my career," Suzuki previously explained of his deliberate path through European football. "There aren’t any Japanese goalkeepers currently playing in the Premier League, so I want to be the first one to achieve that."

Former Sint-Truiden teammate Wolke Janssens praised Suzuki's readiness for the elite level, remarking: "He was still young when he arrived in Belgium, but it felt like he was already a professional player who had been going for 15 years. With his big frame and excellent mindset, it was clear he was destined for a future in Europe."

Ruggeri Steps in to Replace Digne

At left-back, Ruggeri arrives as a direct replacement for Lucas Digne, who recently sealed a departure to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old Italian defender arrives off the back of an impressive season with Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid, making 47 appearances across all competitions. Ruggeri led all Atletico defenders in duels contested (317), tackles attempted (93), tackles won (60), and interceptions (56). He also showcased his attacking ability by delivering seven assists and creating 44 chances—17 more than any other defender in the squad.

Villa kick off their new Premier League campaign on Sunday when they travel to face Brighton.
