The Case for Rohit's Continuity

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has strongly asserted that Rohit Sharma remains "irreplaceable" in India's One Day International (ODI) squad. Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Chopra highlighted that as long as the veteran opener remains fit, available, and continues to produce runs, he should be the cornerstone of India's build-up to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The discussion comes amid previous speculations regarding Rohit's future in the ODI format, particularly during India's tour of England. There were rumors that the series decider at Lord's might mark his final international appearance following his retirement from T20Is and Tests. However, Rohit silenced critics with a commanding 138-run knock during a chase of 388 runs.

"As long as Rohit Sharma is fit, available, and scoring runs, he remains irreplaceable. We are talking about sheer pedigree and legacy here. You do not need to look anywhere else in ODI cricket right now," Chopra stated. "We should not forget that the next World Cup is in South Africa, where conditions demand experienced heads who have been there, done that, and delivered under pressure."

Stability in the Opening Pair

Chopra also voiced his support for the current opening partnership featuring Rohit and ODI captain Shubman Gill. He argued against making unnecessary changes to a system that is currently yielding results.

"Right now, the opening pairing with Shubman Gill is working seamlessly, so why tinker with something that isn't broken?" Chopra added. "Often, when you have an abundance of options, there's a temptation to try something new just for the sake of it. But no matter how tempting those alternatives look, do not distract yourself."

Statistically Dominant

Rohit's recent form in England was a highlight, where he amassed 175 runs in three matches at an average of 58.33. His standout performance was a 138-run innings off 110 balls, featuring 17 fours and five sixes. While India lost the series 2-1, the partnership between Rohit and Virat Kohli (who scored 74 off 60 balls) provided a significant positive for the team.

Over his illustrious career, Rohit has cemented his place as one of the greatest ODI batters:
