Jannik Sinner Scripts History, Breaks Novak Djokovic's 10-Year-Old Record

Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner has made history at the Miami Open, defeating American Alex Michelsen 7-5, 7-6 in a high-pressure second-round encounter to advance to the quarter-finals. While the straight-sets scoreline suggests dominance, the match was anything but straightforward, showcasing Sinner’s resilience and mental toughness under pressure.

Breaking Djokovic's Record

With this victory, Sinner extended his remarkable winning streak to 28 consecutive sets at ATP Masters 1000 events, surpassing Novak Djokovic’s decade-old record of 24 straight sets won. The achievement places Sinner in elite company and underscores his dominance on the hard courts of the premier outdoor events this season.

Sinner's path to history was paved with grit. Michelsen, a rising American talent, tested him severely—especially in the second set, where he raced to a commanding 5-2 lead. Sinner, however, refused to buckle. Relying on his powerful serve and sharp focus in critical moments, he clawed back to level the set and eventually seized control in the tiebreak.

"I feel like I served very well in important moments and that helped me out, especially in the tough moments," Sinner admitted post-match. "But today was not easy — I played a night match yesterday and today in the daytime, so the conditions were very different."

Hunting the Sunshine Double

The win keeps Sinner on track to complete the coveted "Sunshine Double"—claiming consecutive titles at Indian Wells and Miami. Having already triumphed at Indian Wells earlier this month, the world No. 1 is now just three wins away from cementing a dominant spring swing on the ATP Tour.

Quarter-Final Lineup Takes Shape

Elsewhere in the tournament, several notable results shaped an exciting last-eight lineup. American Frances Tiafoe advanced and will face Sinner in the quarter-finals. One of the biggest upsets came from Spain’s Martin Landaluce, a young qualifier who stunned 18th seed Sebastian Korda in three sets. Landaluce, who had won just one ATP-level match prior to Miami this season, emotionally dedicated his breakthrough win to his late grandmother, stating: "She would have been 101 last week, and she passed away a few months ago. I wanted to give her the victory."

Other winners progressing include Jiri Lehecka, who ousted top American Taylor Fritz, along with Tommy Paul, Arthur Fils, Francisco Cerundolo, and Alexander Zverev—setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion in Florida.

As the Miami Open enters its business end, all eyes will be on Sinner—not just for his pursuit of another title, but for the new heights he continues to scale in men’s tennis.
