The Rise of Ayyoub Bouaddi: Morocco's Academic Prodigy and World Cup Wonderkid

A Rare Blend of Intelligence and Talent

In the world of professional football, "precocious" is a word often thrown around, but Ayyoub Bouaddi defines it. The 18-year-old midfielder is not only making waves on the pitch for Lille and the Moroccan national team but is also pursuing a mathematics degree from the University of Marseille, having obtained his scientific baccalaureat with a "Very good" mention a full year ahead of schedule.

Ayyoub Bouaddi in action

Bouaddi's journey is one of disciplined excellence. From a young age, he excelled in gymnastics, cycling, and tennis before joining AFC Creil at five. His maturity was evident early; by age 10, he was captaining the under-12s. Former coach Sofiane Khair recalls that Bouaddi was an outlier among his peers, shunning distractions like video games and social media in favor of reading and a strict athletic diet.

"He didn’t eat burgers, pizza and things like that... He didn’t play video games either. He never had a PlayStation or a Nintendo DS. He would read lots of books, though," says Khair.

Breaking Records at Lille

Bouaddi's ascent at Lille has been historic. In October 2023, at just 16 years and three days old, he became the youngest player in UEFA club competition history during a match against KI Klaksvik. He soon followed this by becoming the youngest player in the French top flight since 1981.

One of his most defining moments came on his 17th birthday in October 2024, where he delivered a masterful performance helping Lille stun Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League. Facing a midfield featuring Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde, Bouaddi played with a composure that belied his age. "Real Madrid at home in the Champions League, on my birthday, with a victory at the end — all the elements were there for it to be magical," Bouaddi told L’Equipe.

A Heartfelt Choice of Allegiance

Despite representing France up to the under-21 level, Bouaddi announced in May that he would switch his international allegiance to Morocco, the home of his parents. This decision has set the stage for a poetic World Cup encounter, as Morocco faces France in a quarter-final showdown at Gillette Stadium.

The decision was described by those close to him as a "choice of the heart." Bouaddi expressed his gratitude to France while emphasizing his pride in his double culture. The French Football Federation viewed the move as a "significant loss," but the player remains focused on the mission ahead for the North African side.

Future Prospects and Global Interest

While currently under contract with Lille until 2029, Bouaddi is already attracting interest from Europe's elite. Manchester City is reportedly keeping tabs on the midfielder, exploring options to either integrate him into their first-team squad or secure him via a loan deal.

As he prepares to face stars like Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, Bouaddi remains grounded. In a recent exclusive, he stated: "I’m really happy to know that some clubs are interested in me but for now I’m only focused on the WC and we will try to give everything to do our best."
