Tottenham stun Chelsea as Penders own goal and Palmer red card turn the game
Spurs take advantage of Chelsea’s costly errors
Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge after a late own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders and Cole Palmer’s dismissal swung a scrappy contest in the visitors’ favour. Mathys Tel finished a solo run with a low shot in the 87th minute to secure the points and Tottenham’s first league win at the ground since 2018.
Chelsea had looked more assured early on, with Penders making his first Premier League start in place of the injured Emiliano Martínez. The 21-year-old’s difficult evening began in the 77th minute, when Mateus Fernandes delivered a corner and Penders, pressured by Jan Paul van Hecke, misjudged his punch and turned the ball into his own net.

Palmer sees red as Tel seals the result
Palmer had already been booked following a flashpoint involving Fernandes. He received a second yellow card for a late challenge on substitute Conor Gallagher, leaving Chelsea to finish with 10 men and ending any prospect of a comeback.
Tel made the numerical advantage count late on, driving in from the left before striking low from around 20 yards. It was his first Premier League goal of the season and capped a strong performance from the forward.
Chelsea struggled to create clear chances without João Pedro, with Morgan Rogers operating alongside Palmer in an improvised front line. Pedro Neto was among the home side’s brighter performers, while Moisés Caicedo worked hard to disrupt Tottenham’s midfield. For Spurs, Fernandes was influential in the middle and delivered the corner that produced the opening goal.
The defeat marked Chelsea’s first home loss of the season. Tottenham, meanwhile, recorded a second consecutive win and ended a long wait for a league victory at Stamford Bridge.
