Van Dijk Accuses Liverpool of 'Giving Up' After Humiliating FA Cup Exit

Virgil van Dijk looks dejected after Liverpool's defeat

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk delivered a scathing assessment of his team's performance after they were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, accusing his teammates of giving up during the match.

The humiliating defeat at Etihad Stadium ended Liverpool's hopes of domestic silverware this season and added to the growing pressure on manager Arne Slot, with the Reds suffering their 15th defeat across all competitions this season - their most losses since the 2014-15 campaign under Brendan Rodgers.

Van Dijk's trip on Nico O'Reilly inside the penalty area allowed Erling Haaland to open the scoring from the spot, marking the fourth penalty the Dutch defender has conceded this season - more than any other player from Europe's top five leagues. The situation deteriorated rapidly for Liverpool as City doubled their lead before half-time through Haaland, with the Norwegian completing his hat-trick in the 57th minute after Antoine Semenyo had added the hosts' third.

Captain's Apology and Criticism

Speaking after the match, Van Dijk offered a heartfelt apology to Liverpool's traveling supporters, many of whom left well before the final whistle as the scoreline became increasingly embarrassing.

"I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half," Van Dijk said. "Obviously, you come out with the right intentions from the dressing room, to hopefully score for 2-1 as soon as possible to change the game. The opposite happens and to come back from 3-0 is obviously very difficult here - but also you shouldn't give up and that's maybe, at a certain point, what happened."

The captain didn't mince words about the collective failure: "We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager. The way we played in the second half, especially, must hurt everyone. It definitely hurts me."

Teammate Echoes Concerns

Van Dijk's criticism was echoed by teammate Dominik Szoboszlai, who questioned Liverpool's mentality after full-time and showed visible frustration toward the away end after the match. The Hungarian midfielder's reaction highlighted the growing sense of crisis within the squad.

Liverpool's defeat was particularly concerning given their upcoming Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. According to the Opta supercomputer, the Reds have just a 41% chance of reaching the final four and only a 7% probability of lifting a seventh European crown.

Transition Troubles

Van Dijk acknowledged the team is in a transitional phase but stressed the need for mental resilience ahead of their crucial European encounter. "It's a together thing, isn't it? Obviously, he's responsible as the manager, but we are the ones on the pitch that have to do it," he explained.

"The matter of fact is now, PSG are waiting for us. I watched them on Friday a little bit. It will be so tough again. So we have to be ready mentally as soon as possible. I've been lucky enough to play for Liverpool for so many years. The main thing we always had was togetherness. Now, obviously, we are in a little bit of a transition, we have to find it. It's difficult to perform every two days if you don't have it consistently."

Historical Context

The defeat to Manchester City continued Liverpool's struggles against their domestic rivals this season and marked another low point in what has been a challenging campaign. Liverpool and PSG have met on six previous occasions in European competition, with both sides registering three wins each.

Their most recent meetings came in the Champions League last season, where both teams won 1-0 away from home in the round of 16, before Paris Saint-Germain won in a penalty shootout at Anfield to progress (4-1). Liverpool will need to summon a significantly improved performance if they hope to advance past the French champions and salvage something from their season.
