Shoriful Islam bags historic seven-wicket haul against Australia to end 140-year drought

Bangladesh left-arm fast bowler Shoriful Islam etched his name into the history books during the second Test against Australia at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, claiming a sensational seven-wicket haul to end a 140-year-old statistical drought.

Shoriful Islam celebrates taking a wicket against Australia

The 25-year-old pacer from Panchagarh tore through the Australian lineup to return career-best figures of 7/48 from 15 overs, bowling Australia out for 210 in their first innings. Remarkably, Shoriful also top-scored for Bangladesh with 14 runs in their first innings, emerging as the lone bright spot in a contest that saw Bangladesh slump to a crushing defeat inside two days.

First left-arm pacer since 1886 to claim seven-for vs Australia

Shoriful became the first left-arm fast bowler in 140 years to take seven or more wickets in a single Test innings against Australia. He is only the fourth left-arm quick in the history of Test cricket to achieve the rare feat.

The last left-arm fast bowler to accomplish this milestone was England's Dick Barlow, who returned 7/44 in the second innings of the Manchester Test in July 1886. Barlow had also achieved the feat previously in the Sydney Test of January 1883.

The first-ever left-arm pacer to take a seven-wicket haul against Australia was England's Tom Emmett, who recorded 7/68 over 59 overs in Melbourne in January 1879.

Elite company in Test history

While Shoriful joined an exclusive club among left-arm fast bowlers, the overall record for the best bowling figures by a left-arm bowler against Australia remains with England spinner Hedley Verity, who claimed 8/43 at Lord's in June 1934.

The all-time greatest bowling figures against Australia in Test cricket still belong to England off-spinner Jim Laker, who took all 10 wickets for 53 runs at Manchester in July 1956.
