Real Madrid's Bernabéu Stadium to Transform into Tennis Training Facility for Madrid Open

Historic Soccer Stadium to Host Tennis Stars for Madrid Open Training

In a remarkable transformation of one of the world's most iconic soccer venues, Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu stadium will temporarily convert from a soccer pitch into tennis courts to serve as a training facility for next month's Madrid Open tournament.

Strategic Timing and Innovative Technology

According to three sources briefed on the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Madrid Open will use the Bernabéu as a training facility between April 23 and April 30. The proposal capitalizes on several strategic factors:

  • The Bernabéu's proximity to the player hotel for the tennis tournament
  • Real Madrid's run of three away games in late April and early May against Real Betis, Espanyol, and Barcelona
  • The tournament's status as a men's and women's event one rung below a Grand Slam

The transformation is made possible by the stadium's revolutionary retractable pitch technology, which was the central feature of the $1 billion renovation completed in late 2023. The pitch is divided into six sections measuring 11.6 meters by 107 meters that can be stored underground in what is essentially a massive underfloor greenhouse.

Technical Innovation and Multi-Use Vision

The innovative system uses grow lamps and climate controls to keep the grass in pristine condition while allowing other facilities—like clay tennis courts—to be constructed on top of the concrete base that covers the underground storage. This technological marvel enables the stadium to host diverse events beyond soccer.

Club president Florentino Pérez has long harbored ambitions of staging a tennis match at the stadium, particularly between 22-time Grand Slam champion and Madrid super fan Rafael Nadal and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. During the club's 2019 general assembly, Pérez revealed that injuries had scuttled several plans to stage such a match.

Connections Between Tennis and Soccer

The connection between tennis stars and Real Madrid runs deep. Nadal has declared a desire to become president of Madrid in the future, while men's world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is also a huge fan of the club. Conversely, soccer stars routinely attend the Madrid Open, which is normally held at the Caja Mágica, six miles south of the Bernabéu.

The renovations to the Bernabéu were designed to boost the club's already world-leading revenues of over $1.2 billion per year through hosting events outside of soccer. The stadium has already demonstrated this versatility by hosting its first NFL game last November and a Taylor Swift concert in 2024.

Benefits for Madrid Open Players

For the Madrid Open, whose defending champions are Norway's Casper Ruud and Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka, adding more practice courts at the Bernabéu will allow the tournament to provide more comfortable facilities for all players. The tournament declined to comment on the plans when approached for confirmation.

The scheduling also accounts for potential Champions League commitments. A possible Champions League semifinal first leg against Liverpool or Paris Saint-German, scheduled for April就是我们28 or 29, would not interfere because Madrid would be away for the first leg.

This temporary transformation represents another step in the evolution of modern sports stadiums as multi-purpose entertainment venues, blending technological innovation with strategic scheduling to maximize venue utilization and enhance athlete experiences.
