Manchester United's Summer Transfer Priorities: Defense Takes Backseat to Midfield and Attack
Defensive Reinforcements Rank Third in United's Summer Priorities
Manchester United may be heading for a busy summer transfer window, but defensive additions appear to be lower on the club's shopping list compared to midfield and attacking reinforcements. According to analysis from The Athletic's Manchester United show, Talk of the Devils, the club's defensive needs rank "maybe third in the list" behind more pressing areas.
Laurie Whitwell explained the reasoning: "I just think that another attacker or a winger of some sort would be ahead of that, after the midfield being such a priority, because of the shift from a back three to now a back four. They kind of had extra central defenders, really, because of that formation and now it's reduced, even though Matthijs de Ligt has been out injured for a long time."
Center-Back Situation: Well-Stocked but with Questions
The center-back position appears well-stocked on paper, with Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, and Lenny Yoro on the right side, and Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven on the left. However, concerns remain about player availability and long-term planning.
Andy Mitten noted: "I've said pretty consistently on here that Manchester United want a defensive leader. I'm not saying that United are going to sign a big centre-half this summer because there are other priorities, financial and positional. I think Maguire buys you another year of experience and stability."
The club is reportedly close to agreeing a new contract with experienced England center-back Harry Maguire, which could delay more significant defensive investments. As Mitten pointed out, "It buys you another year of Heaven and Yoro improving. So if we're going to get more of the same from Maguire — great, you need it."
Left-Back Concerns: The Luke Shaw Dilemma
One area that does require attention is left-back, particularly regarding Luke Shaw's long-term future. Carl Anka expressed concerns about Shaw's availability and form: "I think United need to go to market and get Luke Shaw's eventual successor... on his day, I genuinely believe Luke Shaw is one of the better left-backs in the Premier League, if not in Europe, but it's one, those days are becoming less frequent because of his injury record."
Anka described watching Shaw in recent games: "I was at the Bournemouth game and there were two or three times in the first half when Shaw was trying to do the overlapping runs of old to get ahead of Matheus Cunha, but he's not getting the distance ahead of him in the way that he would have done in 2021."
The discussion highlighted the need for a "1A, 1B" situation at left-back, with potential targets like Patrick Dorgu mentioned as smart market options. Andy Mitten suggested: "United have got to be smart in the market and sign players for €30million like Patrick Dorgu. Dorgu was bought for a very specific Ruben Amorim system, but he's shown he's adaptable."
Goalkeeper Situation: Multiple Moving Parts
The goalkeeping department presents several decisions for United's management. With Andre Onana returning from his loan spell at Trabzonspor, Altay Bayindir potentially seeking more playing time, Tom Heaton out of contract, and Radek Vitek excelling at Bristol City, there are multiple scenarios to consider.
Andy Mitten highlighted Vitek's impressive loan spell: "He's playing for a big club, Bristol City. He's playing for 25,000 fans every week, and I keep getting messages from people who watch him every week, which I don't, to say he is absolutely brilliant. If you're him, do you come in and be No 2? Or do you think, 'I quite like being a goalkeeper and playing every week'?"
Right-Back: Less Urgent Need
The right-back position appears less problematic, with both Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot providing experienced options. Laurie Whitwell noted: "I just don't see it with Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot there. I know that Dalot has his detractors and I can understand this certain element. The reason why is I'd say: don't underappreciate his availability for a start."
Carl Anka added: "They've got bodies at right-back. I don't know if they have the quality where you can be relaxed about it, but there aren't glowing, obvious candidates at right-back who are immediately better than both of these players that you could possibly get in a summer where you're already spending."
Overall, while Manchester United's defense has areas that could benefit from reinforcement, the consensus suggests these needs will take a backseat to more pressing midfield and attacking requirements in the upcoming summer transfer window.
