Havertz Intent on 'Leading the Way' for Germany in World Cup After Injury Struggles

Kai Havertz is determined to be a key figure for Germany in their upcoming World Cup campaign after overcoming a challenging period of injury setbacks. The 26-year-old Arsenal forward recently made a strong return to form following a knee injury that sidelined him for much of the season, and he’s now focusing on leading Die Mannschaft forward on football’s biggest stage.

Return from Injury and Revived Form

Havertz suffered a knee injury on the opening day of the Premier League season, limiting him to just 14 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal. After returning to action in January, he has contributed three goals and two assists, showing signs of regaining his full sharpness despite not yet finding the net in the league.

While Arsenal fell short in the EFL Cup final against Manchester City, they remain in contention for a historic treble—still alive in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup. Havertz views this demanding schedule as a valuable opportunity to build match fitness and confidence ahead of the World Cup.

"We [Arsenal] have many matches in three competitions," Havertz said. "I missed the first six months of the season, and I will give it all for the club, and to be able to go with a lot of confidence to the World Cup. I want to be successful at this World Cup and lead the way."

Back in the National Team

This resurgence has earned Havertz a recall to the Germany squad for the first time in over a year. He missed all three international breaks in the first half of the season due to ongoing recovery and setbacks.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of a friendly against Switzerland, Havertz opened up about the mental and physical toll of his injuries:

"I had a tough time. It was not easy for me. I had my first injury in February last year, three and a half months out, then come back, and then a setback with the knee injury. I now feel completely fit. I need the one or other game from the start to reach 100%, but I feel fit to start lasting over 90 minutes."

Germany's World Cup Challenge

Germany’s World Cup journey begins on June 14 against debutants Curacao. They have been drawn in Group E alongside Ivory Coast and Ecuador. After winning their fourth title in Brazil in 2014, Germany has faced a decline on the global stage, suffering group-stage exits in both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments—a stark contrast to their storied legacy.

With senior players like Havertz aiming to step up and take leadership roles, there’s renewed hope that the national team can reclaim its former glory. His determination to “lead the way” could be pivotal as Germany seeks to break its recent cycle of early tournament exits.
