John Obi Mikel Blasts Chelsea Captain Enzo Fernandez's Leadership, Tells Him to 'F*** Off'
Mikel Slams Fernandez's Leadership Amid Chelsea Struggles
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has launched a blistering attack on Chelsea vice-captain Enzo Fernandez, questioning his leadership qualities and telling him to leave the club if he's "had enough." The criticism comes in response to recent comments made by Fernandez about his uncertainty regarding his future at Stamford Bridge and his preference for living in Madrid.
Controversial Comments Spark Outrage
Fernandez recently told ESPN Argentina that he was not sure if his future would be at Chelsea beyond this season. In another interview with LuzuTV, the Argentine said if he could live in any city in the world, he would choose Madrid. These comments came at a particularly difficult time for Chelsea, who have lost three of their last four Premier League games and were eliminated from the Champions League after an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Mikel, speaking on his Obi One Podcast, didn't hold back in his assessment of Fernandez's statements: "That's not a leader. That's something where if you have leaders, if you have leaders that players respect and look up to, you wouldn't come out and make those statements."
'Put Your Hands Up and F*** Off'
The former Chelsea star continued with even stronger language: "You don't make that statement after we've been disgracefully dumped out of the Champions League, wearing the captain's armband. No player is bigger than the football club. If he's had enough, put your hands up and f*** off. And we move on."
Mikel emphasized the importance of respecting the club, the badge, and the fans, stating: "You cannot come out and say that it doesn't matter, with what is going on. You should be grateful you're playing at a club like Chelsea; because of the culture we built. I can understand a little bit of frustration, but you still have to respect the badge, you still have to respect the football club, you still have to respect the fans, because the fans are the ones who pay your wages."
Chelsea's Current Struggles
The Blues are currently struggling in the Premier League and facing difficulties in securing Champions League qualification for 2026-27. Chelsea have also failed to score in three consecutive games in all competitions for the first time since September 2023, attempting a total of 52 shots (16 on target) across these three matches against Everton, PSG, and Newcastle United.
Despite the criticism, Fernandez has been a key player for Chelsea, making more appearances than any other player since the end of their successful Club World Cup campaign (46), recording 18 goals involvements in that time (12 goals, six goals). Only Joao Pedro, with 18 goals and six assists, has registered more goals or overall goal contributions than the Argentine for the Blues this season.
What's Next for Chelsea?
Chelsea face Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, before returning to Premier League action against Manchester City on April 12. The pressure is mounting on the team, and Fernandez's leadership will be under intense scrutiny following Mikel's scathing assessment of his captaincy credentials.
