Liverpool ready to trust Trey Nyoni in Premier League midfield

Teenager could step up against Brentford

Trey Nyoni is expected to be considered for his first Premier League start when Liverpool face Brentford, with the club navigating a congested schedule and absences in midfield.

Ryan Gravenberch is suspended and Dominik Szoboszlai is still dealing with a hamstring problem, leaving Nyoni in contention to line up alongside Alexis Mac Allister. The 19-year-old impressed in Liverpool’s 6-3 Champions League win over LASK, playing 85 minutes in his first start in the competition.

Nyoni has made 26 appearances since his debut in February 2024, including 10 as a Premier League substitute. His coaches have praised his composure and understanding of the game, while stressing that he must continue to develop and perform consistently.

“He is very mature, he understands the situation very well, he understands the game very well and tactically he is very smart,” the Liverpool head coach said.

Liverpool face a demanding stretch of six matches in 18 days, with another game against Villarreal due shortly after the Brentford fixture. The coaching staff expect to rotate and will need contributions from across the squad.

Nyoni’s ability to operate as either a defensive or central midfielder gives Liverpool another option as they adjust their line-up through the busy run. The club’s message is that young players must be ready when opportunities arrive.
