Mumbai Indians and Mahela Jayawardene part ways after a decade and three IPL titles

A decade of success ends at the Wankhede

Mumbai Indians confirmed on Saturday, October 17, that Mahela Jayawardene will step down as the franchise's head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season, bringing a ten-season association to a close.

Mahela Jayawardene was in charge for three of Mumbai Indians' five IPL title wins in 2017, 2019 and 2020

Jayawardene, who first took charge ahead of IPL 2017, was at the helm for three of MI's five title triumphs — in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He served as head coach from 2017 through the 2022 season before being elevated to Global Head of Performance as the franchise expanded into the SA20, ILT20 and Major League Cricket.

After a forgettable 2024 campaign, Jayawardene returned as head coach replacing Mark Boucher ahead of IPL 2025, steering MI to Qualifier 2. The 2026 season, however, proved disappointing, with the team finishing second from bottom.

Tributes from the MI family

Team owner Nita Ambani paid tribute to the outgoing coach. "Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us," she said. "On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years. We will always cherish the journey we have shared and the memories we have created together."

Jayawardene, in turn, called his MI stint "a very special part of my journey." He added: "I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead."

What next for Mumbai Indians

The franchise has now opened its search for a new head coach ahead of the mid-November retention deadline for IPL 2027.

The separation follows earlier reporting on October 17 in which the Times of India said the two sides had "mutually agreed" to bring in a "fresh perspective," with interviews for the role expected in the coming week.
