Portsmouth snatch late win as Norwich end losing streak
Waddingham’s fortunate finish settles Fratton Park contest
Portsmouth came from behind to beat Millwall 2-1 at Fratton Park, with Thomas Waddingham’s deflected effort in the 82nd minute deciding an error-strewn match. Jake Cooper’s attempted clearance ricocheted off Waddingham and into the net.
Millwall had taken an early lead through Jenson Metcalfe after a mistake by Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid. Lyndon Dykes’s own goal quickly brought the hosts level. The result means Portsmouth have won three of their last four matches, while Millwall have collected six points from their last seven games.
Norwich rally to beat Charlton
Norwich ended a six-match losing streak with a 3-1 comeback win at Charlton, easing pressure on head coach Philippe Clement. Charlie Kelman put Charlton ahead early, but Paris Maghoma equalised before Mathias Kvistgaarden gave Norwich the lead. An Ivan Mesik own goal completed the scoring.
It was Charlton’s first defeat at The Valley this season, and they have now gone nine Championship matches without a win.
United and Derby share the points
Sheffield United drew 1-1 with 10-man Derby at Bramall Lane. Bobby Clark put the visitors ahead in the first half. Patrick Bamford equalised in the 79th minute but was injured as he fell awkwardly in the act of scoring and had to leave the pitch.
Middlesbrough make it five against Bolton
Middlesbrough beat Bolton 5-1 on Friday, moving top overnight. Aidan Morris, Will Lankshear and a Lewis Brunt own goal put Boro in control before half-time. Thelonius Bair pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, but Amario Cozier-Duberry restored the three-goal cushion and Lankshear added his second of the night, taking his league tally to 11.
The victory was Middlesbrough’s 10th consecutive win over Bolton, in a run dating back to 2014. Their position at the top could change after Saturday’s fixtures, with Swansea visiting QPR and West Ham hosting Southampton.
