Barnsley Legend Barry 'Spud' Murphy, Club's Record Appearance Holder, Dies Aged 86

A club great passes away

Barnsley are mourning the loss of Barry 'Spud' Murphy, the club's all-time record appearance holder, who has died aged 86.

The defender spent his entire 16-year Football League career with the Tykes, playing 569 games for the South Yorkshire club between 1962 and 1978 after joining from South Shields.

A record-breaking career at Oakwell

Murphy's longevity and consistency made him a fixture at Oakwell for well over a decade. He became the first substitute in Barnsley's history in 1965, went on to set a club record of 182 consecutive appearances, and was named the club's player of the year in 1972.

His connection to Barnsley did not end when his playing days did. Murphy became a player-coach in 1975 and continued to serve the club after retirement as part of manager Allan Clarke's coaching staff.

He followed Clarke to Leeds United in 1980 and remained at Elland Road until 1984.

Still part of the Oakwell family

Even in retirement, Murphy remained a familiar figure around the club. He made several guest appearances at Oakwell and often hosted charity events on Barnsley's behalf.

Barnsley paid tribute to him in a post on the club's X feed, saying: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Barry Murphy, aged 86.

"An iconic full-back who was our record-appearance holder with 569 games for the Reds. Barry was a true Barnsley legend."
