Tottenham Loanee Pape Matar Sarr Shines as Juventus Beat Celta Vigo 2-1
Sarr Takes His Chance in Vigo
Tottenham loanee Pape Matar Sarr produced a standout performance in Juventus' 2-1 comeback win over Celta Vigo on Thursday, a display that has Italian media tipping him to become a fixture in the Bianconeri midfield.
The match was the second in the league phase of the Europa League, and Sarr made the most of his opportunity, turning in a display that drew warm praise from Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Numbers Behind the Display
According to Gazzetta, the 24-year-old racked up 88 touches in his latest outing, along with 65 successful passes and three interceptions — more than any other player on the team. He also won six duels and registered three total shots: one blocked, one on target and one off target.
That all-round contribution underlined the blend of defensive diligence and forward thrust that has caught the eye in Turin.
'A Crucial Figure in the Midfield'
Gazzetta dello Sport was unequivocal in its assessment of the Senegal international's potential at the club.
"Sarr has shown that he can become a crucial figure in the Bianconeri's midfield," the paper wrote. "He's highly effective at breaking up play and in transition, although he still needs to improve in the final third."
The verdict points to a player already trusted to disrupt opponents and drive Juventus forward, while hinting that his end product remains the next frontier to master.
Injuries Open the Door
Sarr has now made five appearances for Juventus in all competitions this season, starting three times. He played the full 90 minutes in both of the club's Europa League matches against NEC and Celta Vigo, capitalising on the lengthy injury absences of Khephren Thuram and Manuel Locatelli to stake his claim in the middle of the park.
With the season still young, that run of games has given the on-loan midfielder a platform to establish himself under the Juventus coaching staff.
The Loan Deal and Buy Option
Sarr is on loan from Tottenham, and Juventus hold an option to buy. The Bianconeri paid €2.5m for a one-season loan and can make his move permanent for a further €27.5m.
If his early-season form is anything to go by, that clause could become a decision the club weighs seriously as the campaign progresses.
