Chicago Kingsmen reclaim Minor League Cricket crown as Tajinder Dhillon stars with bat and ball
Kingsmen edge Royals in thrilling MiLC final
Chicago Kingsmen reclaimed the Minor League Cricket title with a three-wicket victory over Baltimore Royals in Sunday’s final, riding on a sensational all-round performance from Tajinder Singh Dhillon. The middle-order batter followed up a three-wicket haul with an unbeaten 69 off 33 deliveries to steer his side to their second championship in three years.
Playing their third consecutive MiLC final, Kingsmen were made to work for their victory against a spirited Baltimore outfit. Chasing 179, Chicago were delicately poised when Dhillon walked out with 97 required off 58 deliveries, with USA legspinner Mohammad Mohsin and former IPL legspinner Sarabjit Ladda still in the attack.
Match-winning finishing act
Dhillon first took aim at Ladda, who had conceded a miserly eight runs in his opening two overs. He greeted the veteran with a six and a four in the 13th over, unsettling a bowler instrumental in keeping Chicago’s scoring rate in check. Mohsin received similar treatment two overs later, with Dhillon plundering a couple of boundaries off the USA international in the 15th over.
The calculated aggression ensured the required rate never climbed beyond ten and a half. It was his assault on young allrounder Tanush Apte in the 18th over that all but settled the championship. Dhillon launched the first two deliveries straight down the ground for consecutive sixes before finishing the over with another boundary. The 20-run over reduced Chicago’s equation to a mere eight runs from the final 12 deliveries.
There was a late twist as former India international Rishi Dhawan claimed three wickets in the penultimate over, briefly injecting life into the contest. With Dhillon unbeaten at the other end, Kingsmen eventually crossed the line to regain the trophy they first won in 2024.
All-round impact with the ball
Earlier, Dhillon had been equally influential with the ball, returning figures of three for 29 to apply the brakes on a Baltimore innings that had threatened to surge beyond 200. The Royals eventually settled for 178, a total that offered their accomplished bowling attack a fighting chance but proved insufficient.
A summer of franchise dominance
For Dhillon, the Player of the Match performance capped a remarkable summer across three franchise competitions. He topped the MiLC run-scoring charts with 338 runs in eight innings at a blistering strike rate of 167, predominantly occupying difficult finishing positions.
He had made his presence felt earlier in the summer with MI New York, combining with Kieron Pollard to engineer a remarkable comeback against Seattle Orcas in a crucial encounter. With MINY reeling at 73 for five, Dhillon blasted an unbeaten 66 off just 27 deliveries, adding 80 runs with Pollard to rescue his side to 179. The innings proved decisive in a 17-run victory and earned him Player of the Match.
Dhillon carried that form across the Caribbean after being signed by Antigua and Barbuda Falcons as a replacement player ahead of the arrival of their more established overseas stars. He made an immediate impact in the CPL season opener against Jamaica Kingsmen, striking a match-winning 62 off 37 deliveries to help the Falcons secure a dramatic last-ball victory.
Sunday’s final was the latest instalment of a sustained purple patch that has seen Dhillon emerge as a match-winner for three different franchises. His exploits should make him a prized domestic commodity when MI New York sit down to deliberate retentions ahead of the next MLC season.
Championship pedigree
For Kingsmen, the championship reinforced their standing as the dominant force in MiLC over the past three seasons. Armed with arguably the most formidable roster in the competition, Chicago entered the tournament among the overwhelming favourites. Their squad featured USA ODI batting mainstay Milind Kumar, former Pakistan international Syed Saad Ali and Hassan Khan, the globetrotting T20 allrounder who recently earned his maiden USA call-up.
The Kingsmen’s campaign had begun with a defeat in their opening fixture, but what followed was an emphatic demonstration of collective strength. They regrouped to win eight consecutive matches, carrying that momentum through the knockout stages and into the championship final. While the star-studded roster made them formidable favourites on paper, it was Dhillon who delivered when the championship was on the line.
