Hirving Lozano has vowed to give his all for the LA Galaxy after completing a loan move from San Diego FC, as he looks to resurrect his MLS career following a prolonged exile from competitive football.

The 30-year-old Mexican forward has been frozen out of San Diego's squad for the entire 2026 MLS season to date, stemming from a disagreement with head coach Mikey Varas at the end of the previous campaign. He has not played a competitive match since November 2025.

Lozano could make his Galaxy debut as early as Saturday, when Greg Vanney's side host the Houston Dynamo. The Galaxy sit 12th in the Western Conference, two points adrift of the wild-card places, while Houston are flying high in fourth.

Speaking to ESPN, Lozano expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his determination to make an immediate impact at Dignity Health Sports Park.

"The Galaxy are one of the most important clubs in MLS. It was a great opportunity, and well, I took it. I think it was the right decision," Lozano said. "Honestly, I'm happy to be here. The Galaxy have given me an opportunity, and I'm going to try to always give my best for this club."

He added: "They've set up a good programme for me, with solid planning to ensure I can perform at my best level. Ultimately, I'm available to the team if they decide it's best for me to be in the lineup and play up front. But, of course, that's a decision for the coaching staff."

Mysterious San Diego exile

When asked about the reasons behind his exile from the San Diego squad, Lozano was diplomatic but cryptic.

"I don't know the exact reasons, but they have their reasons," he said. "But right now, there's a different objective, different goals, and for the moment, I'm here with the Galaxy."

A proven MLS performer

Despite his recent inactivity, Lozano boasts an impressive MLS pedigree. In 31 appearances for San Diego — 22 of which were starts — he registered 11 goals and nine assists. Only Anders Dreyer (30 goals, 24 assists) has ever recorded more MLS goal contributions for the club.

However, given his extended lack of match fitness, it remains to be seen whether Vanney will thrust him straight into the starting XI or gradually reintegrate him from the bench.

Daunting first test against high-flying Houston

Lozano's potential debut comes against a Houston Dynamo side in formidable form. Ben Olsen's men have won three straight regular-season matches for the first time since March 2024, keeping clean sheets in all three. They have not won four straight league matches since March and April 2019, and have never posted four consecutive shutout wins in regular-season play.

The Dynamo are only two points behind Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps, albeit having played an additional game. Their Brazilian forward Guilherme has been involved in nine goals in his last eight regular-season appearances (six goals, three assists), including scoring in each of his last three matches. He has 18 goal contributions in his first 18 MLS matches (11 goals, seven assists), with only Evander (22) and Lionel Messi (20) boasting more this season.

The Galaxy, meanwhile, are winless in five straight matches (D3 L2) dating back to May, scoring only three times in that run, including a scoreless draw with FC Dallas in their last match on August 1.

Head-to-head history

Each of the last three clashes between the Houston Dynamo and the LA Galaxy have ended in 1-1 draws, including their meeting at Dignity Health Sports Park on May 23. Since 2020, seven of the 13 meetings between the sides have been drawn, with each team recording three wins over the other.

Despite that history, OPTA's win probability gives Houston the edge at 44.7%, with the Galaxy at 28.5% and a draw at 26.8%.
