Julián Álvarez apologizes to Atlético fans after Barcelona transfer saga
Álvarez says he understands supporters’ anger
Julián Álvarez has apologized to Atlético Madrid supporters for comments made during the 2026 World Cup, when he said a move away from the club would be best. The forward later stayed at Atlético after Barcelona pursued him during the summer transfer window but failed to complete a deal.

Speaking after scoring the winner against Deportivo on Saturday, Álvarez addressed the reaction to his remarks. “They were a mistake on my part, both in how I said them and the timing, and above all because I understand people’s anger,” he said. “As a fan, I would have been angry too.”
He thanked Atlético supporters for their backing, including during the recent weeks, and said his focus was now on improving his performances with the team. “It’s time to get to work because we have very important things to do with the team,” he said.
Barcelona pursuit did not lead to a move
Álvarez’s future has continued to draw attention since Barcelona’s unsuccessful summer interest, but the club’s sporting director, Deco, has suggested Barça have moved on, saying: “Julian is in the past.” Álvarez remains at Atlético.
