FA Cup tie ordered to be replayed after referee's penalty blunder
Mulbarton Wanderers have voiced their deep frustration after being ordered to replay their FA Cup qualifying tie against Woodford Town following a technical error made by the match referee.
Eighth-tier Mulbarton, who compete in the Isthmian League North, had initially secured a 2-1 victory away at Essex Senior League outfit Woodford Town in their second qualifying round clash. However, Woodford lodged a formal protest with the Football Association over an incident that occurred in the 30th minute of the contest.

During the first half, Woodford successfully converted a penalty, but the referee disallowed the goal due to encroachment by several attacking players. Instead of ordering the spot-kick to be retaken, as strictly mandated under Law 14 of the Laws of the Game, the official erroneously awarded Mulbarton an indirect free-kick.
FA Orders Full Replay
Although the FA initially indicated that protests regarding misapplications of the rules were not permissible, the issue was subsequently reviewed by an FA sub-committee. The panel determined that a technical error had occurred and ruled that the match must be replayed in its entirety.
Mulbarton will now host the rearranged fixture on Tuesday, 29 September, with the tie set to be settled on the night. The club confirmed that the decision is "final and binding" without any right of appeal.
In a strongly worded statement, the Norfolk-based club expressed their dissatisfaction with the outcome:
"The club is deeply upset and disappointed by this decision, the impact that it will have upon our football club, and the potential wider implications regarding the finality of results for any FA Cup match in the future played by any team and the integrity of the game as a whole."
Woodford Town and Gloucester City React
In contrast, ninth-tier Woodford Town welcomed the decision to uphold the competition's regulations, stating:
"Woodford Town FC would like to thank the FA for its thorough consideration of the matter, and for reaching a decision that ensures the tie can be concluded in accordance with FA Cup rules."
The winner of the rearranged clash will go on to host Southern League Premier Division South side Gloucester City in the third qualifying round on Saturday, 3 October. Gloucester City, who had initially prepared to travel to Mulbarton, released a statement sympathising with traveling fans affected by the sudden scheduling changes.
