Gautam Gambhir Turns 45: Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina Lead Birthday Tributes to India Head Coach

A landmark day for India's head coach

Gautam Gambhir turned 45 on Wednesday, and the messages arrived from all corners of Indian cricket. Former teammates, administrators and old rivals lined up to salute the man who now sits in the India head coach's chair, with the tributes blending personal affection with recognition of a career that has delivered silverware in two very different roles.

Among the most personal notes came from Yuvraj Singh, who took to Instagram to back his former India colleague. "GG, you know I've always got your back and wish you only go from strength to strength! Happy birthday, brother. Always upwards, and keep making us proud! Lots of love," Yuvraj wrote.

Raina hails 'a fighter on the field'

Suresh Raina struck a similarly emotional tone on X, describing Gambhir as a competitor who never took a backward step. "A fighter on the field, a champion at heart, and a man who has always stood tall for Indian cricket," Raina wrote. "Wishing you good health, happiness, and many more milestones in your journey. Keep inspiring, keep leading."

Administrators join the chorus

The goodwill extended beyond the dressing room. Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley said the capital was proud of its homegrown star. "Happy Birthday, Gautam Gambhir! Wishing you good health, happiness and continued success. Delhi is proud of its own son and his invaluable contribution to Indian cricket. May you continue to inspire generations and take Indian cricket to greater heights," Jaitley told IANS.

BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla praised the coach's intensity and dedication to the game. "Your passion for cricket, competitive spirit and unwavering commitment to Indian cricket continue to inspire. May you be blessed with good health, happiness and continued success as you contribute to the growth and glory of Indian cricket. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead," Shukla wrote.

From opener to head coach

Gambhir was one of India's leading opening batters between 2003 and 2016, forming a formidable partnership at the top of the order with Virender Sehwag. Across international cricket, he scored 10,324 runs in 242 matches at an average of 38.95, including 20 centuries and 63 half-centuries.

His place in Indian cricket folklore was sealed at the 2011 ODI World Cup, where he scored 393 runs in nine innings with four half-centuries. His 97-run knock in the final against Sri Lanka at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium helped India chase down a target of 275 and lift the trophy after 28 years.

Gambhir also built a rich legacy in the Indian Premier League, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to titles in 2012 and 2014. As a batter, he scored 4,217 runs in 154 IPL matches, including 36 half-centuries.

A trophy-laden coaching spell

Gambhir took charge as India's head coach in July 2024, and the results have followed quickly. Under his leadership, India have won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2025 ACC Men's Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

As he marked his 45th birthday, the messages from Yuvraj, Raina, Jaitley and Shukla captured a common theme: a fierce competitor who has carried Indian cricket forward in whatever role he has been handed.
