Adrian Newey’s difficult first campaign shaping Aston Martin’s 2026 Formula 1 car has revived memories of another ambitious project from the celebrated designer: McLaren’s unraced MP4-18 of 2003.

Two ambitious designs, two very different eras

Aston Martin’s AMR26 has attracted attention ahead of the 2026 season, particularly after a difficult gestation period and the expectation that the car will receive an upgraded Honda power unit when the championship resumes after the summer break.

Those struggles have prompted comparisons with the McLaren MP4-18, Newey’s only previous Formula 1 project that never reached a Grand Prix. Like the Aston Martin, the 2003 McLaren was built around daring technical ideas that pushed beyond conventional design thinking.

Why the MP4-18 still matters

Although the MP4-18 failed to make a race start, its concepts were not simply discarded. Several of the McLaren’s innovations would prove influential in later Formula 1 seasons, giving the car a legacy beyond its brief and troubled development programme.

That history offers a possible precedent for Aston Martin. The AMR26’s early difficulties do not by themselves determine whether its most radical solutions will succeed, but the comparison highlights how ambitious engineering projects can influence the sport even when their first iteration falls short.

A test of Aston Martin’s development programme

The key question is whether Aston Martin can turn the AMR26’s bold ideas into a competitive package as development continues. Its upgraded Honda power unit and future technical changes will provide important tests of the car’s underlying concept.
