F1 engine compression-ratio dispute reaches crunch point as e-vote looms on loophole
Formula 1 has been plunged into a political firestorm in recent weeks and months over whether engine manufacturers have found a loophole in the new 2026 technical regulations. At the centre of the dispute is the engine cylinder compression ratio, which has been reduced from 18:1 to 16:1 for the new season — and whether Mercedes and Red Bull have discovered a clever way around the tighter limit.
The compression ratio measures how much the engine can squeeze the air and fuel mixture before ignition. The more the engine compresses the fuel, the hotter it becomes, increasing the power it can produce — though overdo it and it becomes counterproductive. With the 2026 power units relying much more heavily on electrical power than previous generations, closer to a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric power, the compression ratio matters more than ever.
How the suspected loophole works
The controversy centres on when the FIA scrutineers check the compression ratio. According to Article C5.4.3 of the regulations, measurements are taken “at ambient temperature” — when the engine is cool and at the temperature of its surroundings, rather than when it is running. The suspicion is that Mercedes and Red Bull have found a way to comply with the 16:1 limit while the cars are stationary and cool during checks, yet reach an 18:1 ratio when temperatures skyrocket on track, unlocking potentially a few tenths of a second per lap depending on the circuit.
This is a significant matter that extends beyond the two teams accused of exploiting it. Mercedes supplies engines to Alpine, Williams and McLaren, while Red Bull provides power units for itself and Racing Bulls.
The paddock weighs in
“It’s impossible when we have new rules not to have such areas of discussion. That’s always been the case,” FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis said in a recent FIA video about the 2026 technical regulation changes. “I think what has changed is that we are determined to make this a championship of competition between the best drivers, the best engineers, the teams, but not a championship of rule interpretation. We want it to be a championship of engineering prowess as well as driving prowess, but not who’s a smarter rule interpreter.”
In a statement, the FIA said it has been aware of the issue since it first emerged late last year. While engine heat can affect physical dimensions, it acknowledged the rules don’t require testing at operating temperature, while noting that “the new limit naturally raises questions about interpretation and compliance” and that “adjustments to the regulations or measurement procedures can be considered for the future.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described F1 as a sport “full of surprises,” touching on how “there’s never a situation where you can say you’re sure about anything.” He added: “All along the process, when you design an engine, you’re keeping the FIA very close to the decisions you make, and that’s what we did. We have had all the assurances that what we did was according to the rule.”
Others in the paddock struck a more cautious tone. Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley said: “I know that each power unit manufacturer is working very closely with the FIA on this topic, and we trust 100 percent in their ability to manage this right the way through this entire set of technical regulations. So I think on our part, it’s in safe hands.”
Red Bull’s Laurent Mekies added: “The simple truth is that we don’t really mind if the regs goes left, if the regs goes right. What we absolutely want, to Jonathan’s point, is clarity on what we can do and what we cannot do.” Pushing back on suggestions the storm was overstated, he insisted: “It’s true that it’s early days, but it will come to a point very quickly where any competitive advantage, whether it is one, two, three, whatever number of tenths (of a second), is going to make a difference.”
Williams team principal James Vowles, by contrast, felt the issue was overblown: “There’s probably a misunderstanding of just how significant it is,” he said, adding that “it’s just noise” to him, while conceding he understands “why everyone was focused on it.”
What happens next
Politics have shifted swiftly. In the last two weeks, Red Bull changed its position on the matter, aligning with Ferrari, Audi and Honda. With four out of five engine manufacturers in agreement, a rule change could be pushed through if they form a supermajority and Formula One Management and the FIA support it. Four OEMs wanted the change in place before the Australian Grand Prix, first practice for which takes place on March 6.
The FIA has announced that a proposed change is now open for e-voting among power unit manufacturers, with results expected in about 10 days — a window that closes before the homologation date of March 1. The FIA World Motor Sport Council will need to give final approval for any regulation changes.
“Over recent weeks and months, the FIA and the Power Unit Manufacturers have collaboratively developed a methodology to quantify how the compression ratio changes from ambient to operating conditions,” the FIA said. “Following validation of this approach, a proposal has been submitted whereby, from 1 August 2026, compliance with the compression ratio limit must be demonstrated not only at ambient conditions, but also at a representative operating temperature of 130°C.”
The real power lies with the Power Unit Advisory Committee, a separate group from the F1 Commission that oversees engine governance and comprises the five manufacturers, FOM and the FIA. The group has met before to discuss the matter without reaching a resolution. Now all eyes turn to the e-vote to see whether a “super majority” will push the change through — and whether F1’s new era begins with a rules clarity battle rather than simply on-track glory.
