Sri Lanka Postpones Cricket Series with Afghanistan Amid Middle East Tensions

The Sri Lanka national cricket team has indefinitely postponed its upcoming white-ball series against Afghanistan, which was set to commence in the United Arab Emirates this week. The decision comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, affecting travel and regional stability.

A Sri Lanka Cricket official confirmed the cancellation to AFP, stating, "We had to cancel because of the flight situation... and the ongoing fighting in the region." The series included three T20 Internationals scheduled in Sharjah on March 13, 15, and 17, followed by three One-Day Internationals in Dubai on March 20, 22, and 25. This tour would have been a historic milestone, marking the first time Afghanistan hosted Sri Lanka for a bilateral series.

The postponement is a direct result of escalating conflicts in the Middle East. Tensions surged after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, leading to retaliatory strikes from Tehran. These events have severely disrupted air travel across the region, with Dubai's airport temporarily closing on Saturday as Iran fired drones and missiles at targets in the Gulf.

Afghanistan, long affected by war, has never hosted an international cricket match on its soil. Instead, the team has relied on neutral venues like India or the UAE for home fixtures. This cancellation underscores the broader impact of geopolitical instability on international sports schedules.
