A Tale of Two Strategies

The internal battle at Racing Bulls continued to provide entertainment during the 2026 season as Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad faced off at the Hungaroring. While both drivers managed to score points, a decisive tactical shift mid-race allowed Lawson to gain the upper hand over his teammate.

The weekend started with Lawson showing stronger form during practice. Lindblad, meanwhile, faced a setback in FP3 due to a late power unit change, though he recovered impressively to qualify P9, narrowly beating Lawson.

Race Day Drama

Lawson made his intentions clear from the lights out, jumping ahead of both Lindblad and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg to claim eighth position early on. However, the race became a test of patience and tire management. Lawson found himself momentarily caught in the crossfire of a battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

"I was just trying not to get in the way and be too much involved," Lawson explained, noting that the encounter cost him significant time. "It ended up costing me so much time behind them, which at the time was a bit stressful. But it was a good move. It was a very Max move!"

The Decisive Pivot

Initially, Racing Bulls planned a one-stop strategy using a long first stint on medium tires. However, the pressure from Nico Hulkenberg forced the team to react. Lindblad was pitted on Lap 20, followed by Lawson a lap later.

As the race progressed, the team decided to split their strategies to maximize potential outcomes. Lawson transitioned to a two-stop strategy, pitting again on Lap 42, while Lindblad stuck to the original one-stop plan. Lindblad admitted he had actually suggested the two-stop possibility to the team previously, stating, "I was saying I think it's going to be a two... the default plan was a one, but we had it in the background."

Final Results

The gamble paid dividends for the New Zealander. Equipped with fresher soft tires, Lawson showcased superior pace in the closing stages, overtaking Lindblad on Lap 62 to secure P8. Lindblad, whose hard tires had endured a 49-lap stint, eventually dropped to P10 after being passed by Hulkenberg.

Despite the result, Lindblad remained supportive of the team's decision: "If the hard hung on better, I would have looked like a hero being P8. And unfortunately, it didn't. So Liam was the one that maximised."

Lawson expressed his delight with the team's agility: "We didn't plan on two-stopping, so that was something that was a surprise... But it was a great call from the team, and the car's been really, really strong today."
