Union Berlin Appoints Marie-Louise Eta as Bundesliga's First Female Head Coach

In a landmark moment for European football, Union Berlin has appointed Marie-Louise Eta as their interim head coach, making her the first woman to lead a men’s team in one of the continent’s top five leagues. The 34-year-old former professional player steps into the role following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart after a 3-1 loss to bottom-placed Heidenheim.

Etta, who was previously coaching the club’s Under-19s, will lead the senior men’s team until the end of the season. Her appointment comes at a critical time, with Union Berlin hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone. Currently sitting 11th in the Bundesliga table, the club has secured only two wins since the winter break — a poor run that raised serious concerns about their top-flight survival.

“Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure,” Eta said in a statement. “I am delighted that the club has entrusted me with this challenging task. One of Union’s strengths has always been, and remains, the ability to pull together in such situations. And, of course, I am convinced we will secure the crucial points with the team.”

This is not Eta’s first brush with history. In January 2024, she became the first woman to manage a Bundesliga men’s team during a game when, as assistant coach to Nenad Bjelica, she took charge for three matches due to his suspension. Her deep-rooted connection to Union Berlin began in 2023 when she joined as assistant coach for their U19 men’s side under Marco Grote. After first-team coach Urs Fischer was dismissed later that year, she served as assistant during Grote’s interim stint.

Etta retired from professional play at 26 after captaining Werder Bremen’s Frauen Bundesliga team. She transitioned into coaching quickly, taking over the club’s U15 boys’ team before serving as assistant coach for the German women’s national team. Her expertise and leadership within Union’s youth structures made her a natural choice during this moment of crisis.

Horst Heldt, Union Berlin’s sporting director, emphasized the urgency behind the decision. “We have had a hugely disappointing second half of the season so far and will not allow ourselves to be blinded by our league position,” he said. “Two wins from 14 matches since the winter break and the performances shown in recent weeks do not give us the confidence that we can still turn things around with the current setup. We have therefore decided to make a fresh start.”

Heldt expressed confidence in Eta’s ability, noting her planned move to lead the club’s women’s professional team this summer remains on schedule. “I am delighted that Marie-Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis before becoming head coach of the women’s professional team as planned.”

Etta’s first match in charge will be at home against VfL Wolfsburg this Saturday. Union Berlin will also face RB Leipzig, Koln, Mainz, and Augsburg in their final five fixtures, all crucial as they aim to consolidate their Bundesliga status. With fans, players, and staff rallying behind this historic appointment, all eyes will be on how Eta navigates both tactical challenges and cultural milestones.
