Two champions hold the key to the driver market

Formula 1’s 2027 driver market could be transformed by decisions from Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso. Verstappen remains contracted to Red Bull through 2028 but has an exit clause, while Alonso must decide whether to continue racing for Aston Martin after turning 45.

Verstappen’s clause is understood to allow him to leave if he is outside the top two in the Drivers’ Championship going into the summer break. His disappointing first half with Red Bull, combined with questions about the 2026 power-unit regulations, has kept speculation alive despite his long-term contract.

Mercedes remains an obvious potential destination, although Kimi Antonelli’s exceptional campaign makes it harder for Toto Wolff to justify disrupting the young Italian’s position. McLaren also held discussions with Verstappen’s representatives in June, and its strong Hungarian Grand Prix performance has strengthened the appeal of a move to Woking.

Russell and Piastri could be exposed

A Verstappen move to Mercedes would place George Russell’s future under the greatest pressure, even though Russell is expected to remain under a multi-year agreement. At McLaren, reigning champion Lando Norris’s form and status would make Oscar Piastri the more vulnerable driver if Verstappen were to arrive.

Potential replacements across the wider market include Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman. Red Bull’s own pipeline also features Arvid Lindblad and Formula 2 contender Nikola Tsolov, although promoting either would create an inexperienced lineup alongside Isack Hadjar.

Alonso’s decision may depend on Aston Martin’s progress

Alonso’s future could hinge on Aston Martin’s technical progress. The team’s first half was among the worst on the grid, but a chassis upgrade in Hungary produced signs of improvement. Honda is due to bring a major power-unit upgrade at Zandvoort, and its effectiveness could influence whether Alonso commits to another season.

If both Verstappen and Alonso stay put, the market will be less volatile. Racing Bulls, Alpine and Haas could become the main landing spots for drivers seeking a change, with Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto and Esteban Ocon among those whose 2027 positions require stronger second-half performances.
