Formula 1’s 2026 reset rewrites the cars, engines and overtaking

Formula 1 enters a new technical era

Formula 1’s 2026 season is a wholesale reset. The sport is changing its chassis, aerodynamics, power units and overtaking systems at the same time, creating a competitive order that may remain uncertain until the opening race in Australia in early March.

The grid will expand with Cadillac and Audi, while a new circuit in Madrid is scheduled to make its debut in September. The cars themselves will be smaller and lighter, with reduced downforce and new active aerodynamic systems that alter the front and rear wings to manage drag.

Active aerodynamics also ends the DRS era. Its replacement, Overtake Mode, gives a driver additional electrical power when running within one second of a car ahead. Drivers will also have Boost Mode, which can be used at any point around a lap to access maximum battery power for attack or defence.

The biggest engine change since 2014

The 2026 power units remain 1.6-liter V6 hybrids, but the balance between combustion and electrical power has changed dramatically. The MGU-H has been removed, while the MGU-K becomes substantially more powerful. Electrical output rises from 120kW to 350kW, bringing the power split close to 50-50 between the internal-combustion engine and the hybrid system.

That extra electrical capacity will make the cars potent out of corners and on the straights, but it will force drivers to manage energy far more carefully. Maximum power throughout a lap could drain the battery, so lifting off the throttle, braking and other techniques to harvest energy will become central to race strategy.

“Drivers will need to use energy more intelligently, more strategically, around the lap,” said Mark Temple, McLaren’s technical director for performance. “There is a need to harvest energy more consciously and then choose where you use it.”

Williams team principal James Vowles expects the new system to create more tactical battles, describing it as “potent on traction and exits” while also opening the door to strategic games over recovery and deployment.

Fully sustainable fuel adds another engineering challenge

Formula 1 is moving from its previous renewable-ethanol blend to fuel that is intended to be 100 percent sustainable, supporting the championship’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The fuel must work as a drop-in alternative for internal-combustion engines, but producing power consistently from its different chemical components has proved difficult.

Mercedes High Performance Powertrains managing director Hywel Thomas called the development a “truly breathtaking” achievement. Red Bull Ford Powertrains technical director Ben Hodgkinson said the varied evaporation points of sustainable-fuel components create new combustion challenges and require ignition at higher temperatures.

Integration could separate the teams

The closer relationship between the power unit and the chassis is one of the defining features of the new rules. Active aero changes the drag profile of the car, while electrical power helps compensate for the speed lost through packaging and aerodynamic choices.

Works teams such as Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, Audi and Aston Martin, which is supplied by Honda, have an obvious packaging advantage because they know the exact dimensions of their own engines. Red Bull is hoping its new works partnership with Ford will allow it to integrate the power unit more effectively than customer teams can.

Engine rules are also tighter than they were in 2014. Limits on valve sizes and positions, standard fuel injectors and other design restrictions are intended to prevent one manufacturer from establishing the kind of overwhelming early advantage Mercedes enjoyed when hybrid engines were introduced. Even so, reported questions over possible interpretations of compression-ratio rules suggest that technical disputes may arrive quickly.

A season built around uncertainty

The competitive picture is difficult to predict. McLaren ended the previous rules cycle with consecutive constructors’ championships, while Red Bull closed the gap with Max Verstappen challenging Oscar Piastri and 2025 world champion Lando Norris. The new regulations, however, wipe away much of that recent form.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies expects “a huge development race” and major swings in performance as teams learn how to exploit the new cars. Red Bull technical director Pierre Waché also warned that the private Barcelona test was unlikely to provide a representative picture. Two publicly accessible tests in Bahrain in February should offer a clearer indication, although teams will still have time to introduce race-one upgrades.

Early testing feedback has been encouraging. George Russell said the new power units delivered an impressive amount of power and that the cars appeared to be moving through Barcelona faster than he had previously seen. The real hierarchy, however, may not emerge until the first race—and could continue changing throughout the season.
