Lalit Modi Hails Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the 'Best Buy' in IPL History Following Record-Breaking Run

A Teenage Sensation Redefining the IPL

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has bestowed the highest possible praise on Rajasthan Royals' young prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, calling him the greatest signing in the history of the tournament. The 15-year-old batting sensation has transitioned from a bold auction gamble to a cornerstone of the RR lineup, leaving the cricketing world in awe of his explosive capabilities.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) following a masterclass performance, Modi wrote: “Best buy of any player in history @Vaibhavsooryava by @rajasthanroyals.”

Dominance in the Eliminator

The praise follows a breathtaking performance in the IPL 2026 Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in New Chandigarh. Sooryavanshi decimated the SRH bowling attack, scoring a blistering 97 runs off just 29 deliveries. His efforts propelled Rajasthan Royals to a commanding 47-run victory, securing their spot in Qualifier 2 and earning the youngster the Player of the Match award.

This innings further cemented his lead in the Orange Cap standings, with Sooryavanshi amassing a total of 680 runs across 15 matches this season—one of the most dominant campaigns ever seen by a teenager in franchise cricket.

Shattering the Record Books

Sooryavanshi's season has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of records. He has not only outshone his peers but has surpassed legends of the game:

  • Uncapped Player Record: He surpassed teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 2023 tally of 626 runs to register the highest-ever run aggregate by an uncapped player in a single IPL season.
  • The Six-Hitting King: He eclipsed Chris Gayle’s legendary record, smashing a total of 65 sixes this season. This mark stands as the highest number of sixes recorded by any player in a single T20 tournament or series.
  • Consistency in Power: He equalled Gayle’s record for the most IPL innings featuring 10 or more sixes, a feat he first achieved during his maiden century (101 off 38 balls) against the Gujarat Titans.

In a historic first for the sport, Sooryavanshi also became the first player to score 600 runs in a T20 tournament before the age of 16.

The Ultimate Investment

Purchased for Rs 1.1 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction, Sooryavanshi made history as the youngest player ever bought in the league at just 13 years old. What was initially viewed as a high-risk investment has evolved into what Lalit Modi considers the most successful acquisition in the history of the Indian Premier League.
