Pakistan Selector Explains Shaheen Afridi's Omission from Test Squads
Focus on Pace: Why Shaheen Afridi Missed the Cut
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently announced its squads for the upcoming Test tours of the West Indies and England, sparking widespread discussion over the absence of star left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi.
Addressing the media following the announcement, selection committee member Aqib Javed emphasized that the decision was based on the team's current requirements and the specific conditions of the tours, rather than a reflection of Afridi's inherent ability.
Strategic Selection and Workload Management
Aqib Javed clarified that selection is a fluid process and does not dictate a player's long-term career trajectory. "You make selections from tour to tour, and no selector or individual can decide someone's career or future," Aqib stated, as quoted by Geo News.
According to the selector, a review of the previous Test series indicated a necessity for higher velocity in the bowling attack. "After the last Test series, we felt that we needed more pace, which is why this squad has been selected for the West Indies and England tours," he explained.
Future Opportunities and Player Focus
While defending Afridi as an "outstanding bowler" and one of the country's leading talents, Aqib noted that workload management and a player's own preference for specific formats play a role in these decisions. "At times, you have to assess which format of cricket you want to focus on and where your greater interest lies," he added.
Aqib reiterated that the door remains open for those omitted, provided they maintain their performance levels. He warned that current selections are also not guaranteed long-term, stating, "The players who have been left out will also have to perform to earn their place again... It all depends on the conditions."
