Mbappe and Haaland headline opening night

The Champions League returned with familiar drama on September 8. Kylian Mbappe opened his European campaign with a goal for Real Madrid against Inter, while Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat Porto 2-0.

Villa rediscover scoring touch

Aston Villa ended a barren run in the Premier League with a 3-2 win over Club Brugge. John McGinn opened the scoring to become Villa’s all-time leading European scorer with 12 goals, with Nicolas Jackson scoring his first goal since joining from Chelsea and Emi Buendia also on target.

Goalkeeping errors and red cards

The night was not kind to goalkeepers. Yann Sommer was at fault for two goals in Club Brugge’s defeat, while Inter’s Josep Martinez was culpable for Federico Valverde’s second goal against Real Madrid after a rushed attempt to play out from the back.

In Lille, 19-year-old Ethan Mbappe became the youngest Frenchman to receive a red card in the Champions League after an elbowing offence in a 3-2 home defeat to Real Betis, despite setting up the opening goal.

Perfect free kick

AEK Athens’ Razvan Marin made a memorable Champions League debut with a stunning free-kick against LASK, curling a shot through the wall into the top corner for a 1-0 win.
