Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting has voiced his belief that Indian batting icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are eyeing a continued run through the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Despite having retired from Test cricket last year to focus on limited-overs formats and the IPL, the duo continues to be pivotal to India's white-ball strategy.

Ponting, who famously captained Australia to World Cup victories in 2003 and 2007, emphasized that legendary players should never be underestimated. "I can see them pushing ahead and trying to get there. One thing I've always said about champion players is you never say no. You never write them off," Ponting stated, according to news agency PTI.

Current Form and Fitness

The current head coach of the Punjab Kings pointed to the current IPL 2026 season as evidence of the pair's enduring quality. Ponting highlighted Kohli's relentless drive to win and Rohit's surprising physical transformation.

"Virat's been a good example of that again through this IPL. He's not playing as much international cricket as he once was, but that determination and want to win is still there. Rohit Sharma has turned up at this IPL in better physical condition than I've seen him probably in about 10 or 12 years," Ponting added, noting that their shared passion suggests they are still striving to be the best versions of themselves.

The statistical output of both players this season further supports the argument for their longevity. Both athletes have maintained impressive strike rates above 160:

• Virat Kohli: 542 runs in 13 matches, including one century.
• Rohit Sharma: 283 runs in eight matches, including two half-centuries, while largely featuring as an impact player for the Mumbai Indians following a hamstring injury.

Both players have been included in India's squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, starting June 14, though Rohit's participation remains subject to fitness.
