Kirti Azad Debunks Viral 1983 World Cup Victory Party Bill as 'Fake'

Viral Receipt Claims Luxury Celebration, But Azad Sets the Record Straight

Former Indian cricketer and legendary 1983 World Cup winner Kirti Azad has taken to social media to debunk a viral image claiming to be an authentic hotel bill from India’s historic 1983 World Cup victory celebrations. The image, which circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter), purported to be an invoice from London’s Grosvenor Hotel dated June 25, 1983.

1983 World Cup winning team memory

The fake invoice listed several luxury items, including Moët champagne, steak dinners, whiskey, beer, and Dunhill cigarettes, totaling £764. To add a layer of perceived authenticity, the document featured a bold signature that appeared to be that of former captain Kapil Dev. However, Azad quickly identified the document as a complete fabrication.

"We Never Went to This Hotel"

Addressing the rumors, Azad clarified that the Indian team did not celebrate at the Grosvenor Hotel. Instead, the celebrations took place at the Westmoreland Hotel, located adjacent to Lord's Cricket Ground.

"This is fake. It is all over social media. We stayed at Westmoreland Hotel, next to Lords cricket Ground, London. After the victory on 25 June 1983 celebrations took place all night till morning of 26th June. We never went to this hotel. The signature of Kapil Dev is also forged," Azad wrote on X.

A Historic Milestone

The 1983 World Cup Final remains one of the most pivotal moments in sporting history. On June 25, 1983, India—then considered underdogs—stunned the two-time defending champions, the West Indies, by 43 runs at Lord’s. This monumental upset not only ended the era of West Indian absolute dominance but is credited with shifting the global epicenter of cricket to India, sparking a nationwide passion for the sport that continues to this day.
