Brittany Mahomes Overcomes Rare Postpartum Back Fracture in Two-Year Fitness Comeback
While widely recognized as the co-owner of the Kansas City Current and the wife of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes has spent the past two years navigating one of the most grueling and overlooked recovery journeys in fitness. After suffering a severe postpartum back fracture, the mother of three has worked her way back to lifting heavy weights pain-free, bringing vital awareness to women's pelvic floor health along the way.
A Quiet Injury and an Important Warning
The ordeal first became public in March 2024 when Brittany shared a direct message with her followers on social media. "Just your daily reminder: Once you have kids please take care of your pelvic floor. Seriously," she wrote, signing off: "From: A girl with a fractured back."
The debilitating injury stemmed from pelvic floor dysfunction following two pregnancies. Trying to return to high-intensity training before her body had fully recovered led to an unsustainable structural strain. According to ob/gyn Dr. Yves-Richard Dole, Brittany's condition was "relatively uncommon." The pelvic floor connects directly to the lower back through an intricate network of ligaments and tissue. When those stabilizing muscles weaken postpartum without sufficient rehabilitation time, the resulting shift in spinal load can lead to stress fractures.
Navigating Pregnancy and Rehabilitation
Brittany committed to a rigorous and patient rehabilitation regimen that included specialized pelvic floor physical therapy, chiropractic treatments, and regular medical scans. Her path to recovery was far from simple: she embarked on her rehab while pregnant with her third child, requiring her body to heal structural damage while simultaneously adapting to pregnancy.
Progress came in steady, deliberate increments. By August 2024, she successfully performed her first back squat in over a year. Months later, her fitness coach Kristy Rae highlighted Brittany's progress after she returned to squatting 70 lbs.
"A year and a half ago, rehabbing a broken back meant severe pain and limited movement," Rae shared. "Now, almost a year postpartum and progressively getting stronger every week. Proof that the body is capable of incredible things when you meet it with patience and intentional training."
Full Strength and a Shared Mindset
By early 2026, nearly two years after revealing her fracture, Brittany confirmed she has returned to pain-free heavy lifting. "Never thought I would see the day of doing (kinda heavy) deadlifts again with no pain. Man they felt good," she shared.
Her resilience comes at a time when husband Patrick Mahomes is undergoing his own rehabilitation from an ACL and MCL tear. Beyond the personal milestone, Brittany's willingness to be transparent about pelvic floor trauma has thrust an underdiscussed aspect of postpartum recovery into the mainstream sports and fitness dialogue.
