England have officially named a 16-member squad for the first two Tests of their upcoming three-match series against Pakistan, signaling a significant transition for the national side. The series marks the beginning of the post-Stokes and post-McCullum era, with Joe Root returning as full-time Test captain for the first time since 2022.

Key Returns and Squad Changes

The squad sees the return of several key players. Dan Lawrence returns to the Test fold for the first time in two years following a dominant County Championship campaign with Surrey, where he established himself as one of the top run-scorers in Division One. Lawrence is expected to bat at No. 6, and his off-spin capabilities may allow England to employ a four-prong pace attack at Headingley.

Ollie Pope and Brydon Carse also return to the squad; Pope was previously dropped following a dip in form, while Carse had been recovering from injury. Additionally, pacer Sam Cook has earned a recall after making his debut against Zimbabwe last year.

Injury Blow and Batting Shifts

The squad has been impacted by the loss of Jacob Bethell, who has been ruled out of the entire series due to a right knee injury sustained during the ODI series against India. In his absence, Jordan Cox is set to step in at No. 3. This shift will also see Jamie Smith move down to No. 7, having batted one position higher in the recent series against New Zealand.

"Dan Lawrence returns following an exceptional season so far with Surrey and we believe he has the right level of experience, maturity and skill to complement our middle order."

Leadership and Coaching Transition

With the retirement of Ben Stokes and the departure of Brendon McCullum, the team enters a period of leadership change. While Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the new head coach, he will not take charge until the tour of South Africa later this year. For the Pakistan series, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach.
