Nehra Draws Stark Contrast Between Gill and Pandya's Leadership Styles

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra offered a candid assessment of his current and former captains on Monday, drawing a vivid comparison between Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya. Gill, who took over the reins after Pandya's departure from the franchise, is still finding his feet as a leader, Nehra acknowledged, but has all the ingredients to grow into the role.

Nehra, who guided Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their maiden season in 2022 and another final appearance in 2023 alongside Pandya, described the two captains as polar opposites in personality and approach.

"They are very, very different. You are talking about north pole and south pole," Nehra said, drawing a striking analogy. "Both of them were like me, not somebody who has done much coaching. Both of them were not somebody who has done much captaincy, but you learn on your way forward, and suddenly somebody is pretty much doing captaincy for India in two formats. He is only going to get better."

Pandya: Open, Conversational, and Trusting

Nehra painted a picture of Hardik Pandya as a captain who thrived on dialogue and placed complete faith in his coach. Their partnership at Gujarat Titans was built on mutual trust and constant communication, which Nehra identified as the cornerstone of their success.

"One thing is for sure: he (Pandya) completely trusted me, which was the perfect, perfect thing," Nehra recalled. "He will always be keen to learn. He will always ask if something doesn't go right or doesn't go well. He is somebody you can have lots of conversations with."

Gill: Reserved, Observant, and To the Point

In contrast, Nehra described Gill as a quieter, more introverted figure in the dressing room — but one whose silent demeanour masks a sharp cricketing mind and a deep hunger to improve.

"The other way around, Shubman is a little reserved, a little shy, but that's okay. Everyone is different. There is no right or wrong," Nehra explained. "He (Gill) is someone who will not talk or have as many conversations as Hardik Pandya, but he is to the point. He is somebody who is very keen to learn and keen to observe."

Nehra was quick to emphasise that Gill's relative inexperience as a captain is entirely natural given his age and the limited time he has spent in the role.

"Of course, he is a work in progress. He is only 26-27, and it is not that he has been doing captaincy for so many years. It is only 1-2 seasons, and you learn things and you will get better," Nehra added.

A Foundation for the Future

Gill led Gujarat Titans to the IPL final in 2026, building on the legacy established by Pandya and Nehra during the franchise's early years. While their leadership styles may sit at opposite ends of the spectrum — "north pole and south pole" as Nehra put it — the common thread is an unrelenting desire to learn and grow.

With Nehra's backing and the benefit of time, Gill appears well-positioned to carve out his own captaincy identity at Gujarat Titans, one that may look nothing like Pandya's but could prove equally effective.
