India Names 30-Member Probables for 2026 Asian Games; Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill Omitted

BCCI Reveals Longlist for Aichi-Nagoya Games

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially submitted its 30-member men's cricket probables list to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games. The event is set to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.

Indian Cricket Team preparation

The most striking aspect of the list is the absence of two of India's premier batting stars: T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test/ODI skipper Shubman Gill. The omissions are primarily attributed to a congested international schedule, as the Asian Games cricket competition overlaps significantly with India's home white-ball series against the West Indies (September 27 to October 17).

Strategic Scheduling and Captaincy Race

Because Shubman Gill is expected to lead the ODI side against the West Indies, selectors have opted for a two-team strategy to manage the overlap. This has left the captaincy for the Asian Games squad wide open, with Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma emerging as the leading contenders to lead the side in Japan.

The omission of Suryakumar Yadav has sparked further speculation, suggesting that the BCCI may be pivoting toward a younger core in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle.

Rising Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Earns Call-up

While veteran stars missed out, the list provides a golden opportunity for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. After a stellar rise through the IPL and U19 World Cup circuits, Sooryavanshi has officially entered the national selectors' radar, marking a significant milestone in his rapid ascent in Indian cricket.

The 30-Member Probables List

Despite the absence of Gill and Yadav, the pool remains deep with talent, including stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Rishabh Pant. The full list of probables includes:

  • Batters/Wicketkeepers: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ayush Badoni, Dhruv Jurel.
