Lancashire wicketkeeper-batter Joe Moores found himself on the wrong side of cricket history during a County Championship clash against Northamptonshire, becoming only the 43rd batter in first-class cricket history to be dismissed for obstructing the field.

The rare incident occurred in the 33rd over of Lancashire's second innings when Moores had scored just two runs. Northamptonshire seamer Luke Procter delivered a short ball angling into the left-handed batter. Moores played defensively off the back foot, but the ball bounced near his crease and appeared to be trickling back toward his stumps.

Reacting on instinct, Moores grabbed the ball with his hand before immediately realizing his error and dropping it to the ground. Northamptonshire's fielders wasted no time appealing to the umpires, who subsequently ruled Moores out for obstructing the field under the Laws of Cricket.

The dismissal places Moores in an extraordinarily rare club. In the entire history of first-class cricket, only 43 batters have been given out in such fashion. The list notably features just two Test instances: England legend Sir Len Hutton in 1951 and Bangladesh veteran Mushfiqur Rahim against New Zealand in 2023-24.

Northamptonshire Complete Dominant Victory

Moores' unusual dismissal compounded a disastrous performance for Lancashire, who were set an improbable target of 446 runs for victory. The batting lineup crumbled, getting bowled out for just 129 in their second innings. Ben Walkden offered the lone resistance with an unbeaten 22.

Northamptonshire's bowlers shared the spoils in the final innings, with Procter, Ben Sanderson, Liam Guthrie, and Calvin Harrison taking two wickets apiece, while India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal chipped in with one.

Earlier in the match, Northamptonshire laid the platform with a first-innings total of 284, powered by George Bartlett's 92. Lancashire were then bowled out for 137, with Sanderson claiming 4-39. Northamptonshire stretched their advantage by declaring their second innings at 298-4, bolstered by a fine century from Ricardo Vasconcelos (100) and an unbeaten 55 from Saif Zaib.

The heavy defeat marks Lancashire's fifth loss in nine matches, leaving them second from bottom in the standings. Northamptonshire climbed to third place following their fourth win of the campaign.
