Jurel hundred caps India’s commanding day

India tightened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo after a dominant second day that ended with a 495-run lead. Dhruv Jurel’s unbeaten 115, his second Test century, helped India declare on 503/9 before Sri Lanka lost two wickets in the closing stages.

Pant and Jurel accelerate India past 400

Sri Lanka made an early breakthrough when Asitha Fernando dismissed Saransh Jain with a well-directed bouncer. Rishabh Pant, deemed fit to bat, responded emphatically by launching a 95-metre six over fine leg. The shot struck and damaged a solar panel.

Pant continued to attack, hitting Keshara Nuwantha for consecutive boundaries before moving ahead of Jurel. The pair brought up their half-centuries within four deliveries, taking India beyond 400. Pant then struck Prabath Jayasuriya for a four and a six in successive balls shortly before lunch.

The interval briefly shifted momentum. Pant fell attempting another big stroke with the first ball after lunch, allowing Jurel to take charge. Manav Suthar provided valuable support for 50 deliveries before Jayasuriya claimed his first wicket of the innings.

Rain delays declaration and Sri Lanka’s reply

Rain forced an early tea and halted play for almost two hours. Once the match resumed, Jurel moved through a nervous nineties before completing his century. He then opened up with two sixes, pushing India beyond 500 and prompting the declaration at 503/9.

Further rain interrupted Sri Lanka’s reply after only two deliveries, but play resumed at 5:35pm local time. India immediately increased the pressure. Prasidh Krishna found the outside edge of Lahiru Udara’s bat, with Yashasvi Jaiswal completing a diving catch at third slip. Suthar then trapped nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya lbw.

Sri Lanka closed on 8/2 and trail India by 495 runs, with India’s bowlers having made the most of the limited time available at the crease.
