Bournemouth manager Marco Rose expressed his frustration following a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool, warning his squad that they will earn no points in the Premier League for simply “looking good.”

Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal from close range in the 57th minute at the Vitality Stadium to prolong Bournemouth's winless start to the domestic campaign. The Cherries currently sit 17th in the Premier League table with three points from their opening five matches (three draws, two defeats).

'You get no points for looking good'

Despite entering the fixture full of confidence following a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in their European debut, Bournemouth were unable to turn their performance into points on Sunday.

“You couldn't really see that one team deserved to win,” Rose said after the final whistle. “We had to work really hard to get chances, but we conceded an easy goal, and then you lose this kind of game.”

“In both boxes you have to be ready and present. We put more balls into the box than Liverpool, but in the end they scored in one situation. Sometimes we panic in tight situations – we have to be clearer in both boxes. I think we are fit and in the end we could bring more energy into the game.”

Rose lamented the missed opportunities over the first five league fixtures, emphasizing the need for sharper execution in decisive moments.

“We went for the equaliser. It's disappointing because, if you see the five games we have played, there was every opportunity to win, but right now we have three points,” he added. “We will analyse the situation. It's the details, being sharper, being more clinical in both boxes, because all the things around us, like attitude, look good. But you get no points for looking good.”

Struggles in the Penalty Boxes

Bournemouth failed to register 10 or more shots in a Premier League home match for the first time in 2026, managing nine attempts and generating an expected goals (xG) figure of 0.76. In contrast, Liverpool created 1.57 xG from 12 attempts on Djordje Petrovic's goal.

“It is disappointing to lose this kind of game when it is really tight. But we defended one situation not well enough,” Rose explained. “We didn't use our chances today and, in the end, we lost the game in one situation. We have to be sharper in both boxes.”

“We don't have to change things in general – we just have to change details, but we need to change those quickly. We played a good game against Liverpool, who have some more days to recover. We looked fit, even at the end, we were the team that went for a goal. It's about details, and right now it is really disappointing, but I am quite confident we can change the situation points-wise.”
